About me

I grew up just outside Robbins, North Carolina, in the small community of Spies. The middle of five children, our lives were occupied with school, playing outside until way past dark, church, and family events. I graduated from North Moore High School in 1988, where I was active in sports, band, and a student bus driver. I worked in textiles, feed mills, as a newspaper sports editor and paper deliverer,  department manager at Roses, and Little League/middle and high school/American Legion baseball umpire. In short, I always tried to stay busy.

CARTOONIST

From 1984-1994 I wrote and drew the comic strip "Goons" in the Sandhills region of North Carolina for daily newspapers. I served as a syndicated cartoonist with Future Features Syndicate from 1995-2000. I continue my cartooning today, publishing strips online. An ironic twist as a cartoonist, I share the same birthdate as "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz of November 26. We exchanged letters and artwork over the years.

Colleges

I am a lifelong learner and will be until my final breath. A high school graduate of tiny North Moore High School in Robbins, NC, I am proud to say I am a product of the community college system. I have earned degrees from Sandhills Community College, Appalachian State University, Gardner-Webb University, East Carolina University, and obtained Advanced Placement certification in English Language and Literature and Composition from Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. I am a two-time National Board Certified Teacher in English Language Arts.

I was married on July 9, 1994, and am still with my wonderful wife, Diane (an elementary teacher turned media specialist of 29 years), after 30 event-filled years. We have three wonderful sons, Matthew 23, Jacob 20, and Benjamin 18. In addition to being a husband, father, and educator, I am active in church, enjoy yardwork/landscaping, gardening,  drawing, comic book and action figure collecting, a huge Star Wars fan, and model railroader. I love college football and basketball, as well as classic rock and country music from the 50s to the 90s.

My three wonderful sons: Benjamin Lee, Matthew James, and Jacob Marshall.

Middle son Jacob Marshall receives his high school's highest JROTC honor and is named commander of the school's JROTC brigade.
